What is social media? We all use it, most of us probably use it several times a day. When we talk about social media, were actually referring to the internet, twitter, facebook, myspace, blogs, podcasts, videos, email, television etc. Social media is a great way for us to keep in contact with friends and family, find out the latest news, and find out what’s going on in our friends lives through status updates. For most of us, social media is right at our finger tips and therefore we have access to it constantly throughout the day.
With that being said, are we using social media too much and is it getting in the way of other things in our lives that are more important? Some think so. In a study done, it was reported by Emily Sears that social media is addictive, especially when it comes to college students. I think most college students can agree that we’ve all pulled an “all nighter” at least once in our college careers. I know I have. But what about all the other nights we choose to stay up until 1, 2 or 3 a.m.? Is it due to social media? Most likely it is.
Most of our days consist of work and school. Ranging from eight to eleven or twelve-hour days. It’s nice going home at night and being able to unwind by sitting on the computer and checking your facebook, email, or whatever social media you choose. It’s easy to get wrapped up in what you’re doing, and before you know it you just spent the last few hours on the computer. Sears stated the question, “Why is social media so crucial to the average college student that they are willing to lose precious sleep over it?” I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that social media is the only way most of us can stay connected with the world and in the loop on what’s going on in the news.
Without social media, where would we be? It’s so imperative to our everyday lives that most of us would be completely lost without it. At the end of the day, we’re willing to give up a few hours of sleep if that means we can still stay connected to the world and our friends.
